Using smartphone as RFID tag/card

How can I use an Android phone as a room keycard? Is there an app for reading a card and exposing its data as a tag? How can I use an iPhone as a room keycard? Why can't I easily add it to Wallet? Is there another app for that?

To use an Android phone as a room keycard, you typically need two components: an app capable of emulating RFID/NFC tags, and a compatible access control system installed by the hotel or building management.

For Android:

  1. Emulation App: There are several apps available on the Google Play Store that allow you to emulate RFID/NFC tags. Some popular apps include "NFC Card Emulator" and "NFC Tag Emulator & Reader." These apps allow your Android phone to mimic the behavior of a physical RFID/NFC card.

  2. Access Control System Compatibility: The access control system used by the hotel or building must be compatible with NFC technology. This allows your Android phone to communicate with the access control system and simulate the behavior of a physical keycard.

Once you have installed the emulation app and verified compatibility with the access control system, you can use your Android phone as a room keycard by holding it near the NFC reader just like you would with a physical keycard.

For iPhone:

Using an iPhone as a room keycard is more challenging due to Apple's restrictions on NFC functionality. As of now, Apple only allows limited access to NFC capabilities through its Core NFC framework, primarily for reading NFC tags and interacting with contactless payment systems like Apple Pay.

Unfortunately, Apple does not currently provide a built-in feature or API for emulating RFID/NFC tags, which means you cannot easily use your iPhone as a room keycard.

However, some hotels and access control systems may offer mobile apps that allow you to check in and access your room using your iPhone. These apps typically generate a digital key that is transmitted to your iPhone via a secure connection, allowing you to unlock your room door using Bluetooth or another wireless technology.

If your hotel or building does not offer a dedicated app for digital key access, you may need to use a physical keycard provided by the establishment.

In summary, while it is possible to use an Android phone as a room keycard with the right emulation app and compatible access control system, using an iPhone for this purpose is more limited due to Apple's restrictions on NFC functionality.
